Ethereal Bristol-based rising folk-pop artist, Lara Rxse, has self-released her debut EP, unsettling, out now!

Drawing inspiration from personal experiences, as well as past relationships, nature and the changing of seasons, Lara Rxse invites listeners to step into her world, looking at the mundane and turning it into something of beauty, whilst adding in elements of fun.

Describing introspective eponymous track, unsettling, Rxse explains how the meaning of the track came to her subconsciously, mostly taking its inspiration from the period of change from autumn, her favourite season of the year, to winter, and written during the long evenings last year, as well as looking at how this impacts her seasonal affective disorder.

The other three tracks on her debut EP, in your arms, not just another girl and worth the love they took from me, all take inspiration from past relationships, a universal experience many of her listeners will be able to relate to and find similarities in, however, Rxse takes the ubiquitous and turns it into delicate, metaphorical, poetic lyricism and pairs it with whimsical soundscapes and intricate, catchy melodies.

Sonically, she describes the music to have been influenced by the likes of Matilda Mann (having featured in the music video for See You Later), notably within the production and drum sounds, Pinegrove in songwriting style and the transition to playing guitar from piano, Lizzy McAlpine’s dynamics and work within a band, and Lily Williams in terms of string arrangements, her music inspiring Rxse to add orchestral instrumentation to future songs.

On this EP, she describes how half the songs had been written years prior, with two new songs written specifically for the project. Adding in new parts to existing songs, the songwriting evolved over time, Lara confiding in her newly formed band to suggest changes for the songs written solo. The EP therefore features tracks written through a mixture of solo writing sessions and writing with the band, Lara bringing in an idea or a whole song into the studio and allowing them to make changes, whether that be adding new parts or building up the instrumentation. This process of making the EP she explains has been vital in her start at experimenting with co-writing.
